Daniella Zipkin, MD, is a board certified internist and an assistant professor of medicine at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. In addition to her work at the university, Dr. Daniella Zipkin is active in the Society of General Internal Medicine, for which she is Chair of the Evidence-Based Medicine Task Force and leads its Bottom Line Project.
In an effort to improve the quality of communication between patients and physicians, the Bottom Line Project creates one-page evidence summaries of current medical research to be used by doctors to help them better inform their patients. The summaries, which take on a patient-centered perspective, express the bottom line of high impact data using clear language and visual aids and allow patients to make more informed health decisions. Focused on new and emerging research, the Bottom Line Project continues to perfect the publications it produces. Topics include mammography for breast cancer screening, lorcaserin for weight loss, CT for lung cancer screening, the Mediterranean diet for cardiovascular disease, and calcium/Vitamin D for postmenopausal women. Summaries can be found on the Web-only section of the Journal of General Internal Medicine, at http://www.sgim.org/web-only.
